Respected forum members ! I have fair experience of the CSS as well as PMS exam. I myself cleared CSS exam 2011 and stood 343 in all Pakistan. I am aspiring to take my final attempt of CSS this time in coming February. Besides this , I also have qualified for the written exam of PMS with the grace of Almighty Allah. Dears! CSS is thought to to be a very tough exam , but with the prayers of the parents , proper guidance , essential spadework , self confidence and dedicated movement in the right direction one can achieve laurels in this prestigious exam. I learned a lot from this forum. So now I wish to contribute from my side to this forum . If anyone needs any guidance or help regarding CSS or PMS , post your queries here. I will respond and guide. Plz do mention with your query your study background i.e your Masters and your subjects for which you wish to opt for CSS or PMS, in any case whether they have been finalized or of few or any of them has been finalized.

My fellows ! There prevails an ambiguity among the beginners as how to start the preparation for CSS or PMS. And the aspirants keep on wasting time in the quest of knowing the initial steps and keep hesitating in taking the right initiatives. Here I am going to share my personal experience with the intention of helping the new aspirants.

My Dears ! After having decided firmly to go for CSS/PMS and having made up mind to invest time and energy in this exam , the first step one has to take is to decide the optional subjects. Selection of an effective and a sound subject combination is one of the most important rungs in the ladder to success in this pretentious competitive exam. While finalizing the combination , one has to consider the following factors :
1- One's Academic Background.
2- One's Aptitude and Interests.
3- The scoring trend. ( Though it is debatable issue whether scoring trend is myth or reality. However , I believe in it's being reality. )
The first two steps are the most important ones . the reason is that , one has to spend a good amount of times with these subjects, so if they are not in line with one's aptitude , interest and academic background , neither one can comprehend or understand them , nor one can spend time with those as one gets bored and fed up. Therefore , i suggest that one should not be focusing on scoring subjects only , rather should see that which subjects are in line with on's interest and aptitude.
Now the better practice is that first one should make a list of all those subjects which one can opt keeping in view one's aptitude and academic background. and then , one should opt the three which are scoring ones also.

After having selected a better combination of the optional subjects , one needs to search for effective and standard books , notes and relevant study material for the preparation of both elective and compulsory subjects. In this regard , the experience of experienced seniors , subject specialists and CSPz needs to be sought.

Now when this step also has been taken , one thinks as from where to take the start.
Well my personal experience suggests that one should start from one optional and one elective subject simultaneously. Set your time table in a way that you can give time to both of these.

Moreover, I would also advocate another thing. I believe , the CSS aspirants should start from the easier subjects.
In this regard from compulsory subjects one can start from Islamyat or Pak affairs . The reason is very simple that we all have the basic knowledge of both of these subjects. And we feel quite comfortable while preparing those things with which we already have familiarity.

And as I said earlier that one should start one compulsory and one elective subject simultaneously. Therefore , the elective or optional subject from which we have to tale the start should be the one of which we have background or for which we have relatively better aptitude and better level of interest . Like if someone has Masters in Mass Com and has one of his elective Journalism , he should start from it. Or if someone has opted some history subject and has interest in history , then he should go for that. Or if one has better aptitude for some particular language , one needs to start from that. In this way , one needs to keep going with one elective and one compulsory subject at the same time. And along with these the exercise for evolving an impressive and correct English Language expression and the preparation of English as a subject has to be given time on daily basis.

One thing is very important particularly for CSS and almost equal applied to PMS . Better English Expression is prerequisite for both CSS and PMS . Not only there are the papers of Essay and Composition but in all other papers sound English expression , speaks volume for one's maturity and attracts the examiner. Therefore, improvement of English Language expression and preparation of English as subject for css , needs to be given time on daily basis.
Reading English newspaper , preferably Dawn, necessarily needs to be made a habit. Not only it would bring improvement in English expression but also will equip you with knowledge and material regarding current happenings which would be extremely helpful for the preparation of essay , C.A , P.A as well as for Islamyat.

bro uptill now i have completed 7 essays,which i have practised by writting them down,secondly i have done 40% eds,thirdly i have done 30% precise and composition paper.....this was all my present status,now i m in quagmire that whether i should go for this attempt....???? mean in these probably 4 months can all the remaining syllabus be covered.....as a senior wht will u suggest me....

thanks for starting this thread.i hv to ask a lot of questions regarding css.i hv attempted it in 2011 bt not gud experince.becoz i joined officer acdmy in lhr this proved fatal for me.bt after this gap i want to appear this tim.this would b my last chance due to age factor.brother i job in private sector cant leave this jobs.bt want to b csp officer.my optional sbjects are indo pak journalism sociolgy public add and punjabi.plz tell me this combination is right??and plzzzzzzzzz tell me in what way i utilize my time?plz explain all thes queries in detail

Brother ! You are going good. Writing 7 essays means a lot. Your progress is not bad. I will be in a better position to give you suggestion if you mention your subjects which you have chosen and how far you have prepared them and in which subject have you done your graduation or Masters. What is reality is that last four months are actually the period when one studies properly and these create the difference. I think you should go for this attempt. However , the final saying would be after knowing what I have asked.

First thing , I personally am not in favor of academies. They take more of the time , energy and hefty amount of money but leave in lurch. They don't give any solid help but few notes which everyone uses. Secondly , you have edge as those who have job experience they perform better in interview. The result of CSS 2011 suggests this. Thirdly as well as subjects selection is concerned , Indo Pak history which used to be a disaster this year has shown superb result. So for the coming attempt it is hoped to be a good subject. Punjabi is an evergreen scoring subject. Journalism and sociology remain easy subjects which consume less time. Public Admin hasn't been scoring this year as well. So if you have some other choice like international law or any other subject , it's better to go for that. CSS is more about proper time management and dedication along with hard work. You yourself have to spare proper time for it. Punjabi , journalism and sociology don't consume much time. Start an optional and a compulsory subject and have practice of English on daily basis. Time remaining is sufficient , if used properly. You need not be obsessed with it. Just give it proper time. You have the edge of a previous attempt be it was successful or not. Best of luck for coming attempt.

ScienceBusiness adminstraitonIndo Pak historyConstitutional Law.My personal thinking is that Pol. Science and Constitutional are many thing same and I also have good understanding of Pol. Science. Now what do you think about this combinaiton plus my thinking?

I think this is a good combination. Earlier Indo Pak has been a less scoring subject. But the tide has agin turned and Indo Pak has come in it's good times. Pol science also has been scoring last year and in 2012 as well. Pol science will definitely be helpful in the preparation of Constitutional Law. B. Admin isn't bad either. So as a whole it remains a good combination. Now what you need is dedicated and devotional effort and hard work.

It's hard to purchase all books recommeded by FPSC. What about books published by testmakers i.e. Dogar, carvan etc. In next post Kindly share books for all compuslory subjects which you bought for your preparation and for Pol. Science, Indo-Pak History and Constitutional law. I am asking about the books which you personally purchased, Kindly mention compuslory subjects booka.
